The Ostrich Inn, Castle Acre

This is the quintessential country inn – warm old red bricks outside, the inside glowing with dark oak floors and beams, comfy seating, a huge fireplace with logs burning and a well stocked bar and fine food.

A recent refurbishment has added bright new bed and breakfast rooms, most with views over the Green. The restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients to provide a menu of local seasonal dishes with Mediterranean and Eastern touches – choose a Special Fish Stew with bouillabaisse sauce or perhaps Game Hot Pot with venison, pheasant, rabbit & turkey.

Castle Acre is both delightful and remarkable, having not only the remains of a large Norman Castle and Bailey Gate, but also one of the best-preserved priories in the country, dating back to 1090. The village is situated on the Peddars Way, a major Roman trading and Pilgrim route and offers some of the best walks in Norfolk along the River Nar.

The long sandy beaches, unique bird reserves and picturesque coastal resorts of the North Norfolk Heritage Coast are within easy reach of Castle Acre, as are the great houses of Royal Sandringham, Oxburgh, Houghton and Holkham. The cathedral city of Norwich is a fifty minute drive.
