The Merchants House

Partly built in the 15th century with additions in the 1700s, The Merchant House provides Bed and Breakfast accommodation as recommended in Alistair Sawday’s ‘Special Places to Stay.’

Located near the lively quayside, rooms have outstanding views out to sea and across to Holkham Woods. Both rooms are stylishly decorated, with one boasting a four-poster bed, while touches of luxury come with Siberian goosedown duvets and Norfolk-made toiletries. Amenities include freeview TVs, hairdryers and well-stocked refreshment trays.

Breakfast is served, in the old butcher’s shop and uses local and organic ingredients.

The town of Wells-next-the-Sea is a charming mix of Georgian and Victorian architecture, and with an array of galleries is popular with local artists. A miniature steam train connects the harbour, where ‘gillying’ for crabs is a popular pastime, to a beach fringed with colourful huts and pine trees and the more active water sports.

The stunning Heritage Coast is easily explored via the Norfolk Coast Path. Magnificent Holkham Hall, boasting a nearby beach voted Britain’s finest by Coast Magazine, is a mile west and the basking seals of Blakeney are a short journey east. The cathedral city of Norwich is a one-hour drive.
