Heron Cottage, Castle Acre

Heron Cottage, featured in ‘Alastair Sawday’s Special Places to Stay,’ is in the centre of the pretty village of Castle Acre within walking distance of the Castle and Priory. A few steps away lies the village green and a lively pub serving good food, a traditional tea room and friendly village shop.

The accommodation in this smart modern cottage for up to four is appealingly decorated and furnished with no expense spared. Comfy sofas, wood floors and a wood burning stove in the living room, and a well equipped kitchen and romantically lit dining area. Upstairs are painted beds and good bed linen, and everywhere cushions, books, pictures and lamps.

Castle Acre is one of the most remarkable villages in Norfolk, having not only the remains of a large Norman Castle and Bailey Gate, but also one of the best-preserved priories in the country, dating back to 1090. There is much to see at the priory, including the beautiful west end church gable. The village is an excellent base for walkers: the famous Peddars Way skirts the village and meets the Norfolk Coast Path at Holme-next-the-sea on the North Norfolk coast.

The long sandy beaches, unique bird reserves and picturesque coastal resorts of the North Norfolk Heritage Coast are within easy reach of Castle Acre, as are the great houses of Sandringham, Oxburgh, Houghton and Holkham. The cathedral city of Norwich is a fifty minute drive.
